Commercial Cleaning Services: What organisations need to be aware of in 2020

Commercial cleaning services in Ireland

While commercial cleaning has always been a necessity for workplaces, the outbreak of Covid-19 has certainly brought with it additional challenges for organisations in 2020.

For example, employers now need to introduce more regular workplace cleaning to protect the health and safety of employees.

There are a few key things that any organisation should consider when it comes to their commercial cleaning services, both in relation to Covid-19 and also as standard.

Four questions to ask before taking on a new commercial cleaning service:

1. Identify the need: what cleaning services do you require?

This will depend on the type of business premises, specialist facilities or other spaces you are responsible for. You should speak to a commercial cleaning specialist to map out your exact requirements.

 2. Frequency of service: how often should your premises be cleaned?

This will very much depend on your organisational requirements. The commercial cleaning requirements for laboratories and medical centres will obviously differ from that of an office.

3. Industry standards: are there industry standards and training you should be aware of when choosing a supplier?

Most certainly. Firstly check if a supplier is a member of  the Irish Contract Cleaning Association (ICCA), this should ensure they adhere to compliance standards and a specific code of conduct as a minimum.

Professional suppliers should also ensure all cleaning teams have the appropriate training. For example, at Elevare all teams would be trained in chemical handling, manual handling as well as in the correct use of all equipment, including personal protective equipmen

4. Covid-19: Are there specific cleaning requirements for the workplace?

Employers, in conjunction with the Return to Work Safely Protocol, should organise for work areas and frequently-touched surfaces to be cleaned at regular intervals.

Employers should also ensure more detailed systems are in place to make sure reusable cleaning equipment including mop heads and non-disposable cloths are clean before re-use. Companies using dishwashers should use the higher temperature settings to achieve thermal disinfection to help in the fight against viral transmission too.

Employers should also display HSE posters around the workplace to raise awareness of measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
